Sex, Love, & Relationships

Defining Terms

A concept designated in the DSM-5 as clinically significant distress or impairment related to a strong desire to be of another gender, which may include desire to change primary and/or secondary sex characteristics. Not all transgender or gender diverse people experience dysphoria. This is something that typically shows by age 5-7. Research shows that 60-90% of children will outgrow the gender dysphoria with counseling.

A gender stereotype is a generalized view or preconception about attributes, or characteristics that are or ought to be possessed by women and men or the roles that are or should be performed by men and women.

It has become accepted in some circles that if you fit into one gender stereotype more than another, then that implies you are actually that gender, regardless of your biological gender. This can imply that one is transgender. This is a misapplication of the word transgender, and simply means that you are a male or a female who enjoys things that are traditionally stereotyped for the opposite gender.
