Fostering An Interest In Apologetics

Women are becoming increasingly aware of and participating in the area of Christian apologetics, which is something we much enjoy today. While it isn’t the most well-known component of evangelism, its popularity is rising, as is the community. Women have acquired official degrees in apologetics, and as a result, they have more opportunities to lecture, teach, and publish. Apologetics is important to laywomen as well. We feel it is critical for all Christian women to learn apologetics, especially if they are in any way connected to the next generation. Women who teach children, in particular, provide the next generation with the ability to communicate their faith and give compelling arguments for Christianity’s truth, a tool they need today more than ever to navigate a rapidly secularizing culture. Today we want to highlight three women who take an active role in apologetics in different ways:

Hillary Morgan Ferrer

Mama Bear Apologetics

“Hillary Morgan Ferrer is the founder and Mama-Bear-in-Chief of Mama Bear Apologetics. She feels a burden for providing accessible apologetics resources for busy moms. Hillary is the co-author and general editor of Mama Bear Apologetics: Empowering Your Kids to Challenge Cultural Lies (Harvest House, 2019).  Hillary has her master’s degree in biology from Clemson University and is working on a master’s degree in apologetics from Biola University. She loves helping moms to discern both truths and lies in science and culture, and she also specializes in understanding the root causes of doubt. She and her husband, John, have been married for 13 years and minister together as an apologetics team. She can never sneak up on anybody because of her chronic hiccups, which you can hear occasionally on the podcast.”

What We Love

Mrs. Ferrer is a fantastic author and personality, and her book, Mama Bear Apologetics, breaks down tough concepts into manageable chunks. Her book dissolves the genuine cultural challenges we face today into achievable steps and teaches us how to confront those cultural myths. Her podcast is as insightful and serves as a continuation of the knowledge. We admire how much emphasis she has placed on mothers in particular.  She and her team’s information is priceless, serving as a lifeline for parents who wish to grow godly children into godly people. Despite the fact that these materials are geared at Christian mothers, anybody may be a “Mama Bear.” We recommend that you drive in if you have a child’s ear.

Dr. Melissa Cain Travis

Author, Professor, Speaker

“Dr. Travis earned a PhD in Humanities with a Philosophy concentration from Faulkner University’s Great Books program, where her dissertation research focused on the natural philosophy and natural theology of Johannes Kepler. She earned the Master of Arts in Science and Religion from Biola University and holds a Bachelor of Science in general biology from Campbell University.

Dr. Travis currently serves as President of the Society for Women of Letters and as Affiliate Faculty at Colorado Christian University’s Lee Strobel Center, where she teaches courses in the history, philosophy, and science surrounding the science and faith conversation. From 2013 until 2021, she served as Assistant Professor of Christian Apologetics at Houston Baptist University, where she taught courses in philosophy, apologetics, and ancient literature.

She is the author of Thinking God’s Thoughts: Johannes Kepler and the Miracle of Cosmic Comprehensibility (forthcoming, 2022), Science and the Mind of the Maker: What the Conversation Between Faith and Science Reveals About God (Harvest House, 2018), and a contributor to The Story of the Cosmos: How the Heavens Declare the Glory of God (Harvest House, 2019). She is a member of the Contributing Writers team at Christian Research Institute and The Worldview Bulletin. Her other academic interests include C.S. Lewis, the history of Western philosophy, British literature of the 19th century, and science fiction and dystopian literature of the 20th century. She regularly lectures at universities, seminaries, and private schools around the country.”

What We Love

Dr. Travis is a wonderful addition to our March Spotlight. Her ministry is truly about “finding out the truth of things.” She’s a great example of an academic making a difference by contending for Christ in the context of science and faith. Her knowledge of the function of science in apologetics makes for an in-depth reading for apologists who desire to go deeper and have more fruitful discussions with nonbelievers. Dr. Travis, unlike many academics, is a teacher, making her simpler to comprehend than others. She’s even written a children’s book series called Young Defenders, which is aimed to expose kids to fundamental Christian faith topics in language that even pre-readers can grasp. She’s fighting scientific materialism, and she’s taking us along for the journey. We hope she serves as an example to the next generation of female academic apologists.

Melissa Dougherty

Youtuber, Ex-New Ager, Artist

“Melissa Dougherty is a Christian Artist and Apologist best known for her YouTube channel as an ex-new ager. She has two associate’s degrees, one in Early Childhood Multicultural Education, the other in Liberal Arts, and is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies at Southern Evangelical Seminary. She resides with her husband of 14 years and two little girls in New Mexico where she pursues her online ministry and works as an artist.

Melissa was saved at 16 years old and her life dramatically changed as a result. However, one of the issues she ran into was that she had many questions about Christianity and the Bible and nobody around her could answer them for her. She didn’t know it at the time, but she had a love for apologetics and hunger for theology.

She struggled to find answers for years, and never found a solid foundation in the Bible. In this time, partly due to her biblical illiteracy, she adopted many new thought beliefs that she truly believed were Christian beliefs, especially since almost all the teachers she admired quoted the Bible and talked about Jesus. She believed in things like Christ Consciousness, the Law of Attraction, Pantheism, Channeling, Crystal energies, and more.

It wasn’t until 2010, after she had her first child when a very unexpected visit from two Jehovah’s Witnesses caused her to research not only the Jehovah’s Witness religion but her own beliefs. It was during this time she discovered the terrible deception she’d been in. As a result, she pursued counter-cult ministry to Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons and also taught Christians how to witness to them as well. Those tentative years and lessons she learned in that time were used greatly later on when she pursued online ministry as an ex-new ager.

Melissa wants her content to reach a variety of people from the skeptic to the seasoned believer. Her focus is on reaching people through good theology, teaching about the new age, and through her art, whether satire or painting. Her ministry revolves around loving God and loving people.”

What We Love

New Age practices have infiltrated the Church like a lion in sheep’s clothing, and Mrs. Dougherty is the sheepdog. Delightfully funny and relatable, Mrs. Dougherty uses her wit and wisdom to successfully communicate the differences between Christian and appear-to-be Christian activities that many Christians are following. We chose to include her in our March Spotlight today because she is very easy to for a casual listener to follow, and a great apologist to dive into cultural topics with if you’re just starting out. If you browse her channel you will find satire skits, interviews, apologetics conversations with children, discussions about cults, and so much more. Mrs. Dougherty’s YouTube channel is a treasure trove of valuable information that we recommend to everyone. We also appreciate that she’s a fine artist!
